Weekly Bible Lesson: The Lord Is My Shepherd (Psalm 23)

Text: Psalm 23:1-6 (KJV)

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever."

Lesson Points

1. God provides (verse 1). David, once a shepherd himself, knew what a sheep needs. When the Lord is our shepherd, we lack nothing that truly matters.

2. God gives rest and restoration (verses 2-3). Green pastures and still waters speak of peace. In a busy, noisy world, God still leads us to rest and renews our souls.

3. God is present in the dark valleys (verse 4). The psalm does not promise there will be no valley, but that we will not walk it alone. His rod protects and His staff guides.

4. God honours His own (verse 5). Even when surrounded by opposition, God prepares a table, anoints and blesses until our cup overflows.

5. God's goodness follows us (verse 6). Goodness and mercy do not just visit; they follow us every day, and our final home is in His house forever.

Memory Verse
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1)
