Mountain Moving Faith: A Reflection on Matthew 17:20

Some mountains do not look like mountains. They look like an unpaid bill, a long wait for a child, a stalled career, or a family quarrel that will not end. This week we are sitting with a verse that CCC Goshenland Cathedral in Ibadan chose as the theme of its Word and Worship Conference 2026, held 21 to 23 August: "Mountain Moving Faith."

Key verse (Matthew 17:20, KJV): "If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."

A short reflection

- Notice the size of the faith Jesus names: a mustard seed. He is not asking for perfect faith, only living faith that is planted and kept.
- Notice what is asked of us: to speak to the mountain. We pray, and then we stand and act in obedience instead of rehearsing the problem.
- Notice the promise: nothing shall be impossible. Not because we are strong, but because the One we trust is.

According to the cathedral's own account of the conference, the three days were filled with worship, Bible teaching, a faith workshop and intercession, and the series closed with a Sunday thanksgiving service. It reminds us that mountain-moving faith is rarely a lone effort. It grows in a praying, singing, believing family.

Prayer point: Father, give me faith that is alive, however small. Show me which mountain to speak to today, and give me the courage to take the next obedient step.

Over to you: Which "mountain" are you asking God to move this season? And what small step of faith can you take this week while you wait?

This is a Celeland community reflection and is not an official church publication.
